Everest Base Camp Yoga Trek: 16-Day Yoga & Meditation Itinerary
Morning and evening yoga with a certified instructor on the way to Base Camp — gentle breathwork, restorative practice, and a slower, mindful pace.
The Everest Base Camp Yoga Trek wraps the classic route to Base Camp in a daily rhythm of yoga and meditation. A certified instructor leads a gentle morning practice — breathwork (pranayama), light stretching, and intention-setting to warm the body for the day — and a restorative evening session to release tired muscles and settle the mind for sleep at altitude. It runs over a mindful 16 days, with extra acclimatisation time and a meditation morning at Tengboche, the Khumbu's spiritual centre. No prior yoga experience is required.
We want to be straight about what yoga does and does not do up here, because your safety depends on it. Slow, controlled, pressure breathing genuinely helps: the underlying mechanism — a prolonged, gentle exhale that keeps a little back-pressure in the airways and clears carbon dioxide more completely — is supported by high-altitude research, and it is the same idea as the pursed-lip "pressure breathing" that experienced trekkers use on climbs. What yoga cannot do is prevent altitude sickness. AMS is caused by the lower air pressure at altitude, and the only reliable defences are gradual ascent, sleeping low, hydration, and rest days. A pranayama class is a wonderful complement to those things, never a substitute — so this itinerary keeps the same careful acclimatisation profile as our standard treks and simply adds the practice on top.
The sessions are deliberately gentle, and more so the higher you go. Above roughly 4,000 metres we avoid intense, heat-building, or breath-holding practices in favour of slow stretching, restorative poses, and quiet breathing that support recovery and rest in the thin air. The mindfulness thread runs into the walking too: a slow, deliberate pace — bistari, bistari, as the Sherpas say — is itself the single most effective thing you can do to acclimatise well.
Beyond the mat, this is the complete Everest Base Camp Trek: the Hillary Suspension Bridge, Tengboche Monastery with its autumn Mani Rimdu festival, the glacier walk to Base Camp, and a sunrise at Kala Patthar — experienced at a pace that leaves room to actually take it in.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive Kathmandu: welcome and gentle evening practice
EasyArrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m), a trek briefing, and an optional gentle evening yoga session to shake off the travel and meet the instructor. The plan for daily practice, breathwork, and how it fits around the acclimatisation schedule is introduced here.
Fly Kathmandu to Lukla · trek to Phakding
ModerateThe short flight to Lukla (2,860 m), then an easy downhill first day to Phakding (2,610 m) along the Dudh Koshi. A restorative evening stretch eases the group into the trek.
Phakding to Namche Bazaar
ModerateA morning breathwork session, then river trail and suspension bridges into Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo and the switchback climb to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m). The evening practice focuses on opening tired legs and hips after the long climb.
Acclimatisation: Namche · yoga and Everest View
EasyA morning yoga session, then a "climb high, sleep low" walk to the Everest View Hotel (3,880 m) and Khumjung, returning to Namche. A restorative evening practice with breathwork tuned to help the body adapt to the altitude.
Extra acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar
EasyAn extra rest day that keeps this yoga itinerary unhurried. A longer morning practice and meditation, a gentle wander around the market town, and an afternoon of recovery — banking a second night at altitude while the mind and body settle.
Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
ModerateThe contouring trail and a forest climb to Tengboche (3,860 m). Arriving at the Khumbu's largest monastery, the group can attend the late-afternoon monks' prayers — a natural tie-in to the trek's meditative theme, with Everest and Ama Dablam behind the courtyard.
Tengboche: meditation morning · trek to Dingboche
ModerateA quiet meditation and gentle practice at Tengboche (3,860 m) at first light, the spiritual heart of the region, before walking down through Deboche and up past Pangboche into the open country around Dingboche (4,410 m). Practice becomes gentler now the group is above 4,000 m.
Acclimatisation: Dingboche · gentle practice
ModerateAn acclimatisation hike up Nangkartshang (5,083 m) by day, and gentle, restorative yoga with slow breathing morning and evening — no intense or breath-holding work at this altitude, just practice that supports sleep and recovery.
Dingboche to Lobuche
ModerateUp past Dughla (4,620 m) and the Chupki Lhara memorials to Lobuche (4,940 m). A short, quiet evening session focused on relaxation and breathing to aid sleep at the cold, high camp.
Lobuche to Gorak Shep · Everest Base Camp
StrenuousTo Gorak Shep (5,164 m), then across the glacier to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) beneath the Khumbu Icefall. A few quiet minutes of breathing and reflection at the Base Camp boulders before returning to Gorak Shep for the night.
★ Everest Base Camp (5,364 m)
Sunrise: Kala Patthar · descend to Pheriche
StrenuousA pre-dawn climb to Kala Patthar (5,644 m) for the clearest view of Everest's summit at sunrise, then a long descent to Pheriche (4,240 m). A restorative evening session welcomes the return to thicker air.
★ Kala Patthar (5,644 m)
Pheriche to Namche Bazaar
ModerateA long descending day back through Tengboche to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), with a fuller evening practice now that the richer air below 4,000 m allows a slightly stronger session.
Namche Bazaar to Lukla
ModerateThe final trekking day down the valley to Lukla (2,860 m), with a closing practice in the evening and thanks to the guide, porter, and instructor.
Fly Lukla to Kathmandu
EasyMorning flight back to Kathmandu (1,400 m), a free afternoon, and a farewell dinner. A buffer day is wise in case Lukla weather delays the flight.
Kathmandu: rest, yoga and sightseeing buffer
EasyA flexible buffer day that absorbs any Lukla delay and offers an optional closing yoga and meditation session, plus time to visit Kathmandu's Buddhist sites such as Boudhanath.
Departure day
EasyInternational departure from Kathmandu, or onward travel in Nepal.
Is This Trek Right For You?
Concrete fitness benchmarks for this specific itinerary, not a generic difficulty label.
Fitness benchmark
You should be comfortable walking 10-15 km on uneven, rocky terrain, climbing continuously for 5-7 hours, and recovering well overnight to do it again the next day. Some prior multi-day hiking experience is strongly recommended.
Who typically completes it
Most trekkers who complete this are in their 20s-55s with a consistent cardio base built over 2-3 months beforehand. Older or less-active trekkers regularly finish it too, just with more dedicated training time.
