The mountain
Ama Dablam (6,812 m), named for its resemblance to a mother's amulet box (dablam) worn on a necklace, is widely considered one of the most distinctive and photographed peaks in the world, visible from Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and much of the mid-route trail.
The base camp side trip
Ama Dablam Base Camp sits at approximately 4,600 m, reached via a side trail from Pangboche or Dingboche, a worthwhile 1 to 2 day detour for trekkers with a flexible itinerary and extra acclimatisation buffer built into their schedule.
Best time to add it
The detour works best on an itinerary's second acclimatisation window, after Dingboche's rest day, since the extra elevation gain and loss adds real physical load that's easier to absorb once the body has already adjusted past 4,000 m.
Who climbs it
Ama Dablam is a serious technical climbing objective in its own right, popular with climbers as a stepping stone toward 8,000 m peaks. Base Camp itself remains an accessible trekking destination without technical climbing skill, reached on foot along a well-marked side trail.
