The viewpoint

Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) rises above the village of Gokyo on the shore of Dudh Pokhari, one of six Gokyo Lakes fed by the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's largest glacier. From the summit, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, four 8,000 m peaks, are all visible simultaneously in a single wide arc.

Why trekkers rate it above Kala Patthar

Gokyo Ri sees noticeably fewer trekkers than the classic Base Camp route, and its wider-angle panorama across the Ngozumpa Glacier is often cited by repeat visitors as the more rewarding summit view of the two. The trade-off is access: reaching Gokyo Ri requires either the full Gokyo Lakes loop or a technical pass crossing, not a short detour from the standard trail.

The climb itself

The ascent from Gokyo village (4,790 m) gains roughly 570 m over a rocky, occasionally scrambly trail, typically taking 2 to 3 hours up and timed for a pre-dawn or mid-morning summit before afternoon cloud builds over the peaks.

How to include it

Gokyo Ri is reached as part of the Gokyo Lakes 17-day itinerary or the Three High Passes 20-day itinerary. It is not accessible as a short standalone add-on from the classic Base Camp route without the glaciated Cho La Pass (5,420 m) crossing, which requires crampons and an ice axe in most seasons.

Compare to Kala Patthar

Kala Patthar, the viewpoint above Gorak Shep on the standard EBC route, offers a closer, more direct view of Everest's summit itself, while Gokyo Ri trades that proximity for a broader four-peak panorama and a genuinely quieter summit experience.
